Historic Essex Market is a collaboration with fellow ICP DOC ’18 Alum, Roy Baizan. Upon graduation we were invited to document the various vendors, workers, and spaces of the market in the months leading up to its move to Essex Crossing.  Although the Lower East Side’s residents are battling the effects of gentrification, the market’s modern new home is hailed as an example of developers and community organizers working together. Each vendor at the Historic Essex Market were invited into their new space without a rent increase, or additional fees; a gesture virtually unheard of in New York City’s push for development.
